During a regular day each moment is measured against the most productive thing I could be doing, sometimes consciously but also often largely subconsciously.  This is the opposite of cultivating a deep attention to the world around me, which requires slowing down to think and notice, and to take part in a time that loses all semblance of belonging solely to me, since paying attention means waiting for things to come about at their own speed. In my everyday life time feels like the linear and static medium through which I move and which I am the ruler of, making it both my responsibility to use it well (productively) and my fault if I don't (a waste).  But while hiking I don't feel like either of these apply. I can have an unpleasant day when the weather turns bad and a hike becomes a slog, but even then I never think of it as a 'waste' of time--the term just doesn't seem to apply. I want to pause on this for a moment longer, asking two questions. First, how does the take-up of writing to tell different stories complicate the idea of writing as a technology of power or maybe cause us to grapple with questions about legitimacy and truth in different ways? Consider the possibilities and risks afforded by public spaces where anyone can write anything (and also online spaces) – how do these re-arrangements also re-organize accountabilities and audiences. Also, I am thinking about the implication of this notion of legitimacy of the written word vs spoken, dialogic knowledge – does marking a story in this etched way impress upon us more than dialogue? Put another way, can our conversations stay with us in a different way, maybe a more enduring (authentic? Connecting? Creative?) way, than when we calcify our storytelling, despite the former being less recognized universally?
